East Indian Railway Company opened the Manihari-Katihar-Kasba section in 1888 and the North Bengal Railway opened the Katihar-Raiganj section the same year. The Barsoi-Kishanganj section opened in 1889. All these lines were 1,000 mm (3 ft 33⁄8 in) wide metre gauge lines.
Regarding railway communication, Mr. L.S.S O' Malley in the old District Gazetteer (1911) Mentions :-
Manihari railway station is served by four passenger trains on each side, viz., two for Main lines, one for Katihar and the last for Radhikapore branches. For Jogbani, Dhubri, Radhikapore extra coaches are provided. Every train is connected with steamer. At Manihari Ghat and Manihari railway station there is one third class waiting hall. There are one upper class waiting room for ladies and gents each, two non-vegetarian and one vegetarian refreshment rooms, four sweetmeat stalls and the same number of the tea stalls at ghat. There are three platform tube-wells and two water trollies for providing drinking facility to the passengers.
There is a big railway colony having 300 huts where 2,000 railway employees reside. There is one railway hospital and one railway U.P school.
This railway station has a great importance from commercial and religious point of view.
मनिहारी स्टेशन संग्रहालय में लगे जानकारी के अनुसार :-
विभाजन के पश्चात, फरक्का बैराज के आरम्भ तक, मनिहारी-कटिहार लाईन उत्तर बिहार, उत्तर बंगाल तथा असम के साथ कोलकाता (कलकत्ता) रेल लिंक उपलब्ध कराने में साहेबगंज के माध्यम से "फेरी सेवा" के साथ एक महती भूमिका निभायी।
सामरिक दृष्टि से भी यह मार्ग विगत 3 युद्धों में हमारे सैन्य आपूर्ति बहाल रखने में अति संवेदनशील साबित हुआ है जिसमें हमारी सेना पूर्वोत्तर के सीमा क्षेत्र को अभेद्य बनाए हुए हैं।
मनिहारी स्टेशन से कई महत्वपूर्ण गाड़ियों का परिचालन होता था जैसे- दार्जिलिंग मेल, ब्रह्मपुत्र मेल तथा नार्थ बंगाल एक्सप्रेस (7 अप- 8 डाउन) इसमें शामिल थी जो फेरी सेवा (मनिहारी घाट) के द्वारा साहिबगंज (सकरीगली घाट) के माध्यम से कोलकाता (कलकत्ता) एवं शेष पूर्वी भारत से जोड़ता था। यह मार्ग यात्री सेवा के साथ-साथ व्यापारिक गतिविधियों के लिए अपने समय में बहुत प्रसिद्ध रहा है। किंतु फरक्का बैराज के निर्माण के पश्चात कटिहार मनिहारी रेलखंड की उपयोगिता कालांतर में घटती चली गई।
